Hi,

Backing strips are expensive and sometimes fall of or pushed of if the wire goes through the gap.

If you have to Xray and I am sure you do if building to API650 then it is better to back grind and back weld.

Miller have a metal cored wire that runs under a sub arc flux and can take a gap we are testing it on our tanks for HORZ. Welds.

It is difficult to punch even 6mm in the horz because of the speed you have to travel at to avoid cold lapping, so we have found it best to back grind and weld.
