RE: [MW:6445] OK 10.71

I must respectfully disagree with Mr. Ibrahim on this issue.

Per Section IX one does not have to use the same brand and type flux as was used on the PQR.  If a replacement flux has the same classification as the flux used for the PQR it is permissible to substitute that flux.  In this case, if the original flux was classified by the manufacturer as F7A4-EM12K another flux classified as F7A4-EM12K may be utilized.  More often than not it is a customer requirement that the same brand and type must be used for production as was used for qualification testing.  It is also a requirement of API 582, the general welding guidelines for petro-chems.  Therefore if API 582 is applicable to your work you will need to requalify if you change flux.  For compliance to ASME Sc IX only, at a minimum, you will have to re-write your WPS to address the non-essential variable QW-404.29.

Bases:

The only applicable essential variable from Section IX is QW-404.9:

Requalification is required when

“(a) a change in the indicator for minimum tensile strength (e.g. the 7 in F7A2-EM12K) when the flux wire combination is classified in Section II, Part C.

(b)  A change in either the flux trade name or wire trade name when neither the flux nor the wire is classified in Section II, part C

(c)  A change in the flux trade name when the wire is classified in Section II Part C but the flux is not classified .  A change in the wire classification within the reuirements of QW-404.5 does not require requalification.

(d)  A change in the flux trade name for A-No. 8 deposits”

(Note that essential variables QW-404.10 and QW-404.27 do not apply in this case, or at least it is highly unlikely)

(It is assumed that QW-404.34 is or can be properly addressed as either neutral {most likely} or active)

If impact testing is required by the construction Code, then QW-404.35 applies as a supplementary essential variable:

“A change in the flux/wire classification or a change in either the electrode or flux trade name when not classified in an SFA specification.  Requalification is not required when a wire flux combination conforms to an SFA specification and a change is made from one diffusible  hydrogen level to another (i.e. F7A2-EA1-A1H4 to F7A2-EA1-A1H16).  This variable does not apply when the weld metal is exempt from impact testing by other sections.  This exemption does not apply to hard facing and corrosion resistant overlays.

The applicable non-essential variables, which must be addressed on the WPS but which can be changed without requalification are QW-404.29, QW-404.33, QW-404.35(w/o impacts).

“QW-404.29  A change in the flux trade name and designation.”

“QW-404. 33 A change in the filler metal classification within an SFA specification, or, if not conforming to a filler metal classification within an SFA specification, a change in the manufacturers trade name for the filler metal.  When optional supplemental designators, such as those which indicate moisture resistance (i.e. XXXXR), diffusible hydrogen (i.e. XXXX H16, H18, etc.), and supplemental impact testing are specified n the WPS, only filler metals which conform to the classification with the optional supplemental designator(s) specified on the WPS shall be used.”

QW-404.35 as above w/o impact testing requirements

Hope this helps

John

Hi,

You have to use the same brand which is used for PQR. It is essential variable. Check the product catalog.

Thanks & Regards

Dear all

I have a flux with name of SA AB 1 87 AC H5. What is its name in the WPS based on ASME IX qualification. put in your mind that its AWS name is     F7A4-EM12K and you know that this name include the flux and the electrode so what i need is the name of flux only in ASME designation

Is OK 10.71 suitable for this flux as this designation is the nearest for the flux i used? put also in your mind that this flux SA AB 1 87 AC H5 doesn't exit in ESAB handbook
