Re: [MW:6296] WPS for API 5L X Grades

I dIsagree with Sohaib as this construction code is  ASME B31.8 and welding code is API 1104.ASME BPV has no role over here.

I would say that you must qualify a new WPS for X60 as the material group of X60 and X65 are different as per API 1104 para 5.4.2.2. This is good for auditing purpose. I also recommend not to purchase dual marked certified X60/X65 as it violates grouping of API 1104.

Technically speaking, a dual certified X60/X65 would be no different than a X60 certified piping and so would not be having any different mechanical properties. On these technical grounds, you can use a dual certified X60/X65 pipe coupon for welding qualification of X60.

On the other hand, a dual certified pipe belong to two different materials group as per API 1104 should not be purchased, as you know that X60 and X65 belongs to two different material groups (see para 5.4.2.2). This can be a point picked up by an inspector or site auditor while auditing welding jobs.

That's why I recommend that a pipe certified in two different material groups as per API 1104 shall not be used as a coupon for welding qualification.

Dear ALL,

You don't need to prepare new WPS as long as the pipe material is the same ( API 5L ).

THIS IS In accordance with ASME SEC IX / QW 403.

Subject: [MW:6287] WPS

Dear All,

We have a WPS qualified for API 5L Gr X -65 to API -5L Gr X42,X52,X60/X65, of diameter range above 12 3/4" with wall thickness 3/16" - 3/4", welding done with SMAW process, electrode used for root is  E 7010P1 and rest with E 8018C3, "My query is whether we shall do the welding with same WPS for API 5L Gr X 60  to API 5L Gr X 60 if not we have to prepare new WPS for the mentioned material.
