[MW:6465] Re: Ultrasonic peening

Dear Sir,

There are some different Ultrasonic Peening technologies, also called
high frequency hammering technologies, so I'm not sure which one
you're asking for but I will explain all of them.

1) Ultrasonic Shot Peening: this technology you can compare with
ordinary shot peening but than with balls shooting on the surface with
high velocity and frequencies therefore they call it Ultrasonic.
2) Ultrasonic Peening (UP): With this technology you have a hand-held
tool witch consist a piezoelectric transducer in which ultrasonic
mechanical frequencies are generated and transferred to a hammer
inside the tool which is hammering against one or more freely moving
pins.
3) Ultrasonic Impact Treatment (UIT): this technology also works with
a hand-held tool but inside this tool there is a magnetostrictive
transducer which converts electrical frequency, 80 V at 27-35 kHz into
mechanical movements transferred to a so called waveguide. This
waveguide also is hammering against one or more freely moving pins
which start to resonate in their own frequency about 200 Hz. UIT
claims that during contact of material-pin-waveguide also the
ultrasonic waves are entering the material by which stress relieve
will be generated in depths up to 12 mm.
4) Pneumatic Impact Treatment (PIT): also a high frequency hammering
technology with a hand-held tool. This technology works with a so
called technical muscle invented by FESTO which again is connected to
a hammer inside the tool and hammering to one or more pins.

All technologies are used in order to enhance the material and/or
welds fatigue strength at which 1) mostly is used for treating wide
surfaces and the other technologies for local treatment at the area of
interest.
Advantage of magnetostrictive transducer and PIT against piezoelectric
systems is that higher loads can be created, therefore these
technologies are often used for increasing fatigue strength of (high
strength) steels at which UP and Ultrasonic Shot Peening often are
used for Non-Ferro materials.

If you need more information about one of these technologies than
please don't hesitate to contact me. I can forward you some articles
about both UIT and PIT if necessary.

Best Regards,

Herman Pieper
