RE: [MW:5981] MW: 5964-ASTM A106/API5L X 52 pipe to use instead ABS AH36/dh36

Dear Pradip,

This is a support structure for 90 T platform. The drawing calls for CHS (circular hollow section) ABS AH/DH36 various diameters.
We wanted to use API 5L x52 as by yield strentgh this pipe may be substituted with CHS ABS AH/DH36.
The question is clear with ASTM A106 pipe, but what about API one then if the YS's are same?

thank you for the email

best regards,
Elshan.

Elshan,

I have attached quite relevant information on ABS-AH-36 steel which  would help you. This steel is a micro-alloyed  C-Mn steel, which may be procured either with TMCP (Thermo Mechanical Controlled Processed) or in Q&T condition.

This  steel  is manufactured to ASTM A-131/A131M specification ( see page 9 of this attachment) as Grade  AH-36 steel. ABS adopted the same ASTM specification and renamed the materials as ABS AH-36 steel.

Please check the test certificates of the material (in case you have received the same) whether they're supplied with TMCP or Q&T. If with TMCP then ASME SA-841(Steel Plates with TMCP) is the preferred replacement for this material . Alternatively ASTM A-131  grade could be chosen also.

ASME SA-841 grade comes in 3 grades , e.g.  Grade A,B,C, and with 2 classes , such as Class 1  (Y.S 310-345 Mpa) and Class 2 (Y.S -380-415 Mpa).If the replacement is plate to plate  then either SA-841 Grade A/B/C (Grade B preferred due to Moderate "C:-0.15%) Class 2  or ASTM A-131 would be preferred.

ASME SA-841 is adopted in Sec-IX-2010 edition (see below). Although this alloy is classified as under P1, Group 2 and 3, using straightforward E-7018 or E-7018-1 would not be recommended for this steels. It's preferred to choose  E-8018 D1 or 8018-G SMAW electrodes for welding of this steel. Electrodes with "G" spec may meet the exact base metal chemistry, but as per SFA 5.5. impact test requirements has to be worked out by the supplier and user. From that aspect  E-8018 D1 electrodes are quite straightforward.

I presume your main concern is on replacement  material for  AH-36 steel, then the above info would be of help.Generally for structural or any design  yield strength is very important, as this is the staring point of material failures. Hence the material chosen should have the Y.S equal or more AH-36 steel. None of the piping mentioned below meet this requirement.

I am not very clear on piping material being used for platforms. Is AH-36 being rolled to pipes?? Or what the  exact specification of piping material specified in your drawing??

Could you please provide those info.

Thanks.

Dear Pradip,

This is exactly the same material that you have attached.

It is evident that AH/DH36 has min yield strength 355 mpa. But ASTM A106/API x52 has min yield strength 240 mpa. Therefore ASTM A106/ API X52 can not substitute AH/DH 36.
What role does yield strength play in the structural construction then?

best regards,

Elshan,

It's very difficult to get information on steels of  ABS specifications as they're proprietary. However I dug out these information. Let me know if your project involves:-

·         The same ABS specifications

·         Is it the same AH36 material, you're talking about.

·         Would it be convenient from your end to email the applicable part/portions of ABS specs.

I am asking the above in order  to make sure that I would be able to advice on the correct spec and materials.

Thanks.

Hi Pradip,

No it is not resolved yet. Could you please advise? And I would like to know what is the role of yield strength on structural and piping construction?

many thanks in advance.

Elshan.

Hi Elshan,

I missed your email. Is this problem resolved, if not I can dig out the information for you.

Appreciate your response.

Thanks

Dear Pradip,

I have got the project here a fabrication of the structural platform. The pipe supports are required to be ABS AH36/DH 36 which is minimum yield strength is required to be 355 MpA.

Can we substitute this structural pipe with ASTM A106 Gr B/ASTM A333/API 5L X52 pipe?

Could you please be so kind to give me a detailed information about it?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
