It is not mandatory to do the welding in Uphill progression as per ASME Sec. IX.
 
See Clause No. QW-405.3 for better explanation.
 
If you change a progression in vertical welds then please check, is the welding consumable is recommended to weld in the same progression?
 
Check with respect to ASME Sec.II Part C.
