RE: [MW:5894] ASME QW 403.5 interpretation.

QW-403.5 is a supplementary essential variable – a variable that applies only when a welding is required to meet impact requirements imposed by the design Code {e.g. ASME  Section VIII, Division 1, UG-84(h)}.

If impact qualification is required by the construction Code you must perform a procedure qualification test with test plate material that meets one of the three conditions listed:

1.       Materials used for test are the same as used in production:  spec, type, and grade

2.       For  ferrous materials {i.e. P1, P3, P4, P5, P6, P7, P8, P10, P11, P15E}, the materials to be tested are of the same P-number and Group-number as the materials to welded in production.

3.       For non-ferrous materials, for which there are no Group-numbers {e.g. nickel based materials P41, P42, P43, P44, P45, P46, and P49), the test plate material must belong to the same P-group as the production material.

The second paragraph lists some special restrictions and allowances:

1.       Separate qualifications for welding dissimilar P-number and Group-number materials must be made by welding a test plate with the dissimilar base metals from the same P-numbers and Group numbers.

2.       If materials differ only by group number (SAME P-number) and all other essential and supplementary essential variables are the same for two PQR’s joining one group number to itself and the second group number to itself, then the dissimilar group number combination is considered to be qualified.  (tough to do in manual, or semi-automatic processes)

3.       If a PQR is performed with dissimilar base materials, in addition to the dissimilar combination, the individual P-number G-number materials welded to themselves are qualified provided the same essential and supplementary essential variables or range of variables is applied.

The third paragraph states that if the construction Code does not require impact testing of the heat affected zones in the base metal(s) – that is to say only weld metal impact testing is required by the construction Code– then the rules of QW-403.5 regarding base metal qualification do not apply and therefore only the requirements of QW-403.11 would apply.

Hope this helps

John

Dear Louis

This means that when PQR need supplementary test(Impact test), it is mandatory qualification for supplementary  be done by  same P-number and Group number as the base metal to be welded.

Karthik,

Thanks. presently I have one PQR P1 G1 to P1 G2, so can I use this PQR for the below

1) P.no 1 G1 to P1 G1

2) P.no 1 G2 to P.no 1 G2

3) P.no 1 G1 to P.no 1 G2

The same time I can't catch the last sentence of the QW 403.5

The variable does not apply when impact testing of the heat affected zone is not required

by other section.

Louis

Dear Louis,

Please find below the interpretation of QW 403.5.-Change in Material Grouping.-Supplementary essential variables.

QW-403.5 (a)

- When you are doing procedure qualification record (PQR) you have to use the same material type and grade which yo are plan  to use in the production welding.

QW-403.5(b)

-  Your actual base metal's P-Number and Group Number to be used in production welding shall match with the P Number and Group Number Listed in QW422 as mentioned in WPS.

QW-403.5(c)

- If you want to weld P Number-1Group Number-1 material to  P Number-1Group Number- 1 and 2 material you should have two PQR as follows.

01. First PQR shall be P.No.1 Group No.1 with P.No.1 Group No.1

02. Additional PQR shall be P.No.1 Group No.1 with P.No.1 Group No.2

If you are having the two PQRs as mentioned above ,you can weld same P.Number material with the same group number material as well as different group number.

OR

If you have the PQR of different P.number and Different Group Number, then you can weld the material with the same P.Number,Group number as well as the combination of Different P.Number and different Group number which you have qualified with the PQR.

For example,

If you have the PQR of P.No.1,Group No.2 with P.No.3,Group No.1..your Procedure shall be qualified for three types of combination as below.

01. P.No.1,Group No.2 with P.No.1,Group No.2

02. P.No.1,Group No.2 with P.No.3,Group No.2

03. P.No.3,Group No.1 with P.No.3,Group No.1.

Thanks & Regards,

(Karthik)
