[MW:6065] RE: 6062] SFA for SS flux

Your customer is incorrect in demanding a non-existent classification.

There is no classification for SAW stainless steel fluxes.  The wire chemistry will be addressed in SFA-5.9.  (note that SFA 5.9 Appendix addresses some SAW issues in paragraphs A7.9.3 and A9.3)  ASME Section IX specifically addresses this issue for SAW in essential variable QW-404.9(d) which states that requalification is required when there is “a change in the flux trade name for A-No. 8 deposits”.  This requirement recognizes the fact that no classification / classification system exists for SAW fluxes. Therefore, Sc IX requires SAW procedures to be tied to the specific brand and type used during qualification testing.

Your PQR must be able to demonstrate adequate tensile properties and ductility of the weld deposit, per testing required by QW-451.1. Deposit chemistry for the PQR must be determined per QW-404.5(d) to meet the A-number 8 requirements and any customer requirements.  Results of chemistry determination should be reported on the PQR.

Good luck.

John

Subject: [MW:6062] SFA for SS flux

Dear Friends

We are qualifying a procedure of SAW process for a particular job as per ASME Sec IX.
The MOC is SS304L.

We are using an imported SAW wire and flux combination: ER308L and compatible flux.

However client wants the SFA number of the SS SAW flux to be mentioned on WPS as we have mentioned SFA 5.9 for ER308L.

Does ASME Sec II part C, 2007 edition mention SFA for SS flux ?

Client is adamant and We are stuckup.

Please advise !

Regards
