[MW:6018] bolster welding

Dear all
I am in to m&R Welding 
I have come across a bolster( forging die holder)
of 1800X 1800 X 500mm thk and is cracked through & through ( 500mm ) 
I am stress relieving the job before welding 
but 500mm is creating few doubts in my mind  like whether this high thick welding will really help salvaging the job
what precautions should be taken and what should be the procedure  can any body help me on the matter
Can any body help me in
