RE: [MW:5530] Casting materials for Valves for ASME B31.4 and B31.8

Dear Rahul,

Thank you so much for your broader reply but I am anxious after looking at the tensile and yield strength of the WCB and WCC casting compared to Pipe material, However we have proposed to use forged Valves of High strength steels like ASTM A694 F60,F65.

Thank you once again.

Hello Mr. Bagesh,

Yes  Casting valves can be used, but it depends on the design pressure of your pipelines.

For high-pressure services , you need to have  high quality castings.

Also if you are using WCB casting with high strength pipe material like APl5L Gr. B X42. X52 & X65. you must take into account the reduce pressure rating of WCB material compared with pipe material.

Also ASME B16.34 has not considered  , I am not exactly sure , but I think about 3 mm as corrosion allowance for valve body thickness calculation.

For higher corrosion allowance you must inform the manufacturer.

On the forging issue, you have an advantage regards to quality of valve body compared with castings, but there is higher cost involved.

hope this helps

Kind regards

Hi Bagesh.

I am agree with Jorge, in Venezuela we use ASTM A216 Gr. WCB or WCC for petroleum liquid and gas too, if there are corrosive ambient choose other material for example Stainless steel.

And A105 <2" diameter.

I have been working for the Colombian ECOPETROL Pipe Line for 20 years, we use ASTM A216 Gr. WCB for valves from 2 to 24 inches diameter and ASTM A 105 less than 2 inches diameter. We transport Crude Oil, ACPM, Gasoline, GLP, Natural Gas, Nafta, Jet A1, Kerosene, Diesel.

Dear All,

Would like to discuss the selection of Valve casting materials for the Pipelines project meant for transportation of Liquids hydrocarbons and Gas,

The Pipe materials used are High strength steels of API 5L Gr. B X42,X52, X65 etc, depending on the requirement of licensor, How to get the correct casting materials for valves, The pressure and temp. Ratings are according to ASME B16.34.
