Re: [MW:5036] Pre Qualified Fillet Weld WPS as per AWS D1.1

I would like to add on to my comment.

Since your requirement for fillet is only 1F and 2F (namely flat and Horizontal), your 3G complete penetration single groove welding WPS is sufficient provided that the thickness and diameter matches.

According to AWS D1.1 Section, Table 4.2  Note 4 clearly states that

"CJP Groove weld qualifications on any thickness or diameter shall qualify any size of fillet or PJP Groove Weld for any thickness or diameter."

So, you can use your prequalified WPS on Single V Groove Complete Joint Penetration for fillet weld qualifications as long as the thickness and diameter matches.

Table 4.1 clearly shows the position qualified for each weld type and position in WPS.

I would suggest that you make your qualifications either in 2G, 3G and 4G if your qualification test piece is plate or a 6G if your qualification test piece is pipe as the range calls for.

Hope this helps.

Dear All,

We have qualified a single V groove welding procedure in 3G position as per AWS D1.1. With this procedure, i can only do 3G in groove and 3F in Fillet. So i have prepared pre qualified single V groove WPS for groove welding in all positions.

But we have some jobs which demand 1F and 2F positions. So, i want to know whether prequalified WPS for the single V which i made is acceptable for doing fillet welding in all positions?? Or is there any prequalified WPS for fillet available ??
