Hi,

A number means the chemical composition of filler metal. Same as P number, to
reduce the number of PQRs ASME  Sec IX grouped the filler metal with A numbers.
A number is essential variable. If any change in A number it calls for new procedure qualification. We can use different AWS classification with same A number according to the applicability without new qualification of PQR.

Ibrahim
