Re: [MW:4764] RE: 4750] SAW for SS

Dear Sir

I would like to know the optimum thickness in Stainless steel suitable
for SAW welding.
We also have SS shells of 20mm thicknes and presently we are using only SMAW process for it with chipback. Can we go for SAW ?

Also we have a Lincoln IdealArc DC 1000 powersource on which the Ammeter shows upto 1200A reading !!

Subject: [MW:4750] SAW for SS

Hi friends

The Job is a vessel and construction code is ASME Sec III NB.

The MOC is SS304L.

The O.D of the shell is 8 (eight) metres, thickness = 30mm, Height of shell is
2700mm.

We want to fabricate two shells of this type.

Each shell has three long seams.

Then both these two shells will be welded by one circ. seam.

I have decided a double V joint with SMAW process from inside welding.

From inside of the shell there will be lot of spiders / fixturing.

I have a few queries:

1)can i deploy SAW process from outside after chipback ?/ YES

2) What dia. of SAW wire i have to use ? (you can
use 3.2 dia

3)Can SAW boom reach at such height of 8 metres ?
On stool you can keep the col and boom and have a scaffolding till that height
to avoid any accident

We have a Lincoln SAW power source of 1200 A. (I
think Lincoln have DC1000/ 1500 or DC600

4)Has anyone used SAW for SS welding of such huge diameters in past ?? Yes

5)What is the optimum thickness in SS that can be welded by SAW to get least
distortion ?

The PQR calls for ASME SecIX tests + IGC practice E requirements to be met..

6)Can we use Double operator TIG and then SMAW from Inside + SAW from outside ? For root + hot pass you can use DOT
