Stress relieving is a type of heat treatment used to release the residual stress from a certain pipe or pressure vessel.
It is carried out in th way described in applicable code. The applicable code defines as and when stress relieving is mandatory and how shall it be performed.
Heating rate is also specified by the code in order to avoid any thermal stress, holding time depends on the total thickness of the component necessary to be stress relieved and cooling rate is also specified to avoid any abrupt cooling which may cause brittleness.

Hope this would help.
