FW: [MW:4270] COMPARATIVE TABLE FOR STEEL GRADES AND DESIGNATION BY CODE OF SPECIFICATION

Hi Mr  Malemela,

Under the North American contestant is the governing society who does everything on standardization of all materials (ferrous, non ferrous or even non-metals). Any steel originating from North America (USA especially) will have an ASTM standards/specification assigned to it.

API specifications are typical to oil and gas applications, and in general this specification does not cover steel products applicable for Non-Oil and gas applications.

EN specification is the effort of One Common European Specification. What is does is, steels and other noon ferrous materials previously having individual specifications such as BS, AFNOR, and DIN….. Are all covered under one common specification known as Euro Normen (EN). You may get a British Steel, German steel both having same EN specification.

If the application of steel products are typically for boiler and pressure vessels then ASME Sec- IX (2007 onwards) have included quite a few EN and API specifications and many of which have been assigned P Nos also. You may see those specifications on page 108 & 109 of Sec-IX(2007).

Note one easy way to know the correct equivalence between ASTM/API/EN materials is to know the UNS No (Unified Numbering System). Any steel having the same UNS no under the ASTM/API/EN specifications is essentially same in chemistry and mechanical properties. However please note due to immense number of specifications involved all steels may not be co-related through UNS no.

For general details and  further guidance you may refer this book:-

Feel free to drop a line if you need further help.

Thanks

Hi All

I often get confused when people switch between API Steel specification and ASTM grades. Can somebody please help me with a link or information that shows comparisons between the various steel grades and their designations across the international standards currently in use? I am particularly interested in API ,ASTM and EN designations and their equivalents across the mentioned codes of specification.

Thanks in advance
