[MW:3543] Re: PT after root pass in SS welding

Hi Syed,

You can carryout the DP on the root pass before hot pass, As per Sec-IX  time between root and hot pass is not an essential veritable but in API 1104 time between passes is an essential veritable. so You can proceed DP test after root pass when weld temp comes below 50deg C since as you know that DP test can be done from 10 to 55 deg C. The requirement of hot pass and 1/3 thickness is only applicable when you are suspending the welding activity.

Furthermore you can prepare seperate WPS with DP test after root pass for particullar joints (ex- Tie in's).

Subject:  [MW:3539] PT after root pass in SS welding

Recently I faced the following issue and kindly clarify my doubt.
A qualified WPS for stainless steel (A312-TP304H) requires PT after root
pass.
After root pass, its not possible to perform PT immediately unless the
temperature reduces.
But, in normal practice, any weld is not to be stopped before completing hot
pass or 1/3rd of groove thickness.
I got difficulty in following both conditions on single weld joint.

Based on the above different opinions, kindly suggest me the right one with
details.
