hai sandy
i think the answer of ur first question is given in the codes (asme).
it depends on the thickness of the plates and the p.nos.being welded.
so please clarify ur material structure and p. no. in addition with these u have to identified the structure nature i.e. prassure parts or non prassure parts

1.       How to calculate preheat & Post heat for welding?

2.       How to calculate cooling rate for welding?

3.       How to know heat input effect on steel (Tempered steel) mean how to know how much max. heat required for any material specially where notch toughness required?
