[MW:3205] Re: 9cr-1Mol

 Dear Mr Dayalan,

I presume your query is on welding of  9Cr-1Mo-V(P/T-91) steel. This steel would require a lot more stringent welding guidelines as compared to other Cr-Mo steels. Such as:-

  • Depending on Customer Spec:-
  1. Control of weldign electrodes, specific manaufacturers such as Metrode, Thyssen-Bohler, Kobe .ESAB etc. Control of Ni/Mm below 1.5 is critical
  2. Proper Preheat and Interpass Temerature cotrol, including cooling below Mf temperature etc.
  3. Dehydrogenetion Heat Treatment(if specified).
  4. PWHT within a very close temperature range.
  5. Hardness, tensileand impact requirement as per Spec.

API-938-B and quite a few documents written by EPRI (Electric Power Reserch Institute) are very good resource books for welding of  9Cr-1Mo-V steel.

Buttering is an option while welding to Lower alloyed (say P22)or austenitic S.S. However PWHT of P-91 steel has to be performed @ recommended P91,PWHT temperature to soften the HAZ. Sec-IX, QW-283 specifies guidlines for buttering.

Dear Dayalan,
You need to carry out procedure using P5B material only. deviation not permited

Dear Friends

I need to qualify procedures for P5B (9Cr-1MoL) material urgently, at present I don't have any material in stock

Since the preheat, interpass, interpass stress relieving and post weld temperature for P5B are too maintained strictly.

is the procedure qualification is  possible by buttering? Did the secIX and Sec VIII Accepts.

Did anybody done it, if so how about the mechanical test results.
