[MW:1952] Re: Variation in Pipe thickness

Dear Vivek,

For case of different thickness welding we can make bevel/taper at the thicker material. This is to avoid stress displacement which can affect a crack potential and abrasion erosion.

Referring to ANSI B31.3 the taper is 30 degree.

I have a query , when there is welding between two CS pipes of
different schedules ( different thickness) needs to be butt welded for
process piping application.

what is maximum variation in the thickness of two pipes , that will
ensure a safe weld.

Is there any code that provides any limitation or guidance .

Regards,

Vivek
