[MW:1932] RE: 1929] Welding L7M Nuts on P1 material

This is the case of welding P no  (Asigned ) to Non assigned No ,We can weld by compatible welding consumable with WPS qualified accordingly as per ASME sec IX  However that will be case to case basis.

Probably the best way is to qualify a fillet weld procedure using these nuts.

Non mandatory Precautions:

- when we have to weld the bolts (especially the nuts) we have to consider that these materials usually have larger percentages of Pb, Sulphur, Phosphorous and Carbon and then their welding is critical;

- as per above, covered electrodes (instead of GTAW) with low strength level have to be preferred;

- careful cleaning by degreasing is mandatory;

- preheating could be useful to decrease the cooling rate.

There is a situation of welding of SA 194 L7M nuts is to SA 516 Gr-70 plate. Since there is no P number assigned for SA 194 L7M (another UNS number is availalbe), theorotically we can not use the existing P number-1 WPS/PQR.

In my opinion considering the practical situation, since SA 194 L7M is compatible with SA 516 Gr-70 considering the mechanical properties, design & service requirements (since going into the same equipment), weldability, we can  use P1 WPS/PQR??

To establish WPS/PQR (just to meet the section-IX requirements), then what option is available (weld the raw material bar ?) ??

regards

GH
