This is to avoid columnar structure/coarse grain, which is very weak in
Impact. If we do multi pass, the passes will get refine by the adjacent
pass and improve the impact toughness at top. Increase in bead width
leads to slower welding speed and increase in heat input which resulting
slower cooling rate and increase in grain coarsening for manual welding.

Gents,

Does anybody knows why multi layer weld capping, especially in sub arc
welding, is preferred than single capping weld? Is there any
metallurgical affect due to dilution in single layer weld capping?
