Dear all,

I disagree with some of the discussion below.

I feel the impact requirement cannot be decided straight away for the
material selected for the following mail (MW-1707).

For material:
Shell - Impact testing is required at MDMT (-30 deg.C) GENERALLY, IT IS
CARRIED OUT at -29 deg.C by STEEL MANUFACTURERS. (As per ASTM A 20)
Nozzle - Impact testing is already carried out at -45 deg.C and not
required separately.
Flange - Impact testing is required at MDMT (-30 deg.C). Pl. note that the
Cl.2 mat. is required to be tested at -18 deg.C only per A350) Refer UCS
66(i)(1)
N.B. Here, I would suggest to use LF2/Cl.1 material which is already tested
at -45 deg.C. (Under such situation, complications will be less)

For Impact test of Welds:
Here, I do not agree with your discussion in the below string for the curve
B or C for B.M. So far as the UCS 66 is concerned, A333/A350 will not fall
under any of the category A/B/C or D. Obviously, for Plate material, impact
requirements will be goerned by Curve-A.

So far as the impact testing requirement of Welds are concerned, UCS 67(a),
(c) and (d) very elaborately describe the requirements. e.g. If you use,
ER70S2 even for root run, the impact testing will be required as eper UCS
67 (a)(2). The exemption of Fig. UCS-66 will not be available for the
nozzle/flange materials as they are not at all classified.

Only Production impact tests may be avoided for Nozzle to Flange welded
joints (as they fall under category C joint).

For shell joints, any way, the impact test of welds will be required for
Procedure as well as Production welds. (Category-A as well as Category-B)

It's debatable whether it falls under curve 'B' or 'C', Unless specifically
asked for these material are produced with normalising treatment, curve C
applied as per Note (3) (b)

Hi Mr.Bathula,
From this question i understand that both SA333 Gr.6 (Nozzle neck) &
SA350 Gr. LF2 Cl2 (Flange) which comes under curve B as per UCS 66 which
requires imact testting at -30deg C & 10mm thk. combination.
Can u clarify on what basis this joint is exempted ?

Shell thickness - 80 mm


Nozzle thickness - 10 mm


MDMT- minus 30 deg.c


Code : ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1





Shell to nozzle neck weld - Is it required Impact tested WPS/PQR ?
Nozzle neck to flange weld - Is it required Impact tested WPS/PQR ?





As per UCS 66 (1) d. The weded asembly more than 2 component, the
individual component thickness and MDMT to be checked. In this case the
thickness of groove is higher than nozzle neck. What thickness to be
considered?.





UCS 66 (1) d. refers the sketches in Sec. VIII to decide minimum thk. it
makes confusion.
