Q:
I am designing a gas pipeline as per ASME B31.8. The specification calls for API 5L Gr B materials pipes. Can I replace this pipe material with ASTM A106 Gr B which is readily available in local market? Please give technical justifications. Thanks!

A:
Each supplier of mentioned materials can provide you with their chemical & mechanical properties, their equivalents and purposes.
As the designer (an expert) of particular pipeline project, only you must overtake decision and responsibility which material to apply!
Nobody else will do it instead of you!
As an expert in this field you have sure some specialized institutions that you can consult, but last decision will be always yours.

Q:
Could you provide the chemical composition of GOST 8732-78/8731-74 and what is the ASTM equivalent?
(asked by: bob@sunssteel.com)

A:
Seamless Pipes in CIS are produced as for sizes acc to:
GOST 8731 & 8732 as Hot Rolled Seamless Pipes
GOST 8733 & 8734 as Cold Drawn Seamless Pipes
However, as for steel grades are mostly used GOST 1050-88
The main grades are 10, 15, 20, 35, 40 and 45.
Gr. "20" acc. to GOST 1050 is equivalent to Gr. "B" acc. to ASTM A 106/A53..
For Casing and/or Tubing pipes sometimes grade is not indicated at all and indicated only a letter as "K", "D" etc. acc. to related yield and tensile strengths.
The same in API standard designated for Oil & Gas Industry mostly used Grades as "B", X42 X52 etc.
Also other grades applicable acc. to relevant standards DIN, EN, ASTM.

Q:
How can I get to know all inquiries for aluminum tubes and pipes?
(asked by: eastcorp123@vsnl.net)

A:
Dear Mr. Anant Shri Kajaria,
This is a very good question!
There are two ways:

1) As a FM (free member) you can request basic data of all companies, which have posted inquiry or offer ads. You will get them for free, chronologically ordered (by dates), in an Excel table with an empty Manipulation Column (MC). Go through posted ads and mark interested ads in MC as e.g. Al-P (P = purchase). Sort then your Excel according MC, hide un-necessary columns and copy & paste interesting data in a Notepad and from it in your working database. As a FM you can also see in the Special directory how many companies, which have jointed their products, buy and sell Al - pipes.

2) As an EM (exclusive member) you'll get automatically basic data with short program description of all companies currently added in the Special directory and its monthly updates. Go to the Special directory, click at Products and then at Group 21000. Find interested Al - pipes. You can click at product's code to get them all or at suppliers or purchasers. You'll get the relating companies in an alphabetical order. In your MC you can mark them as Al-P (purchaser) or Al-S (supplier). There are much more companies in Sd without jointed products. To include also them in your working database, sort your Excel according short description and make then fine research in Program description from the interesting companies using this web site.

Q:
Could you please tell me the main mechanical tests required and chemical analysis of material (aluminium coated) which fit ASTM A463?

Hello everyone,

I am buying materials for a water impulsion that was designed following AWWA c200. My question is related with the elbows because they were specified to be API 5L GrB, AWWA C208, and diameter 48in.

The vendor is quoting the elbow AWWA C208, but ASTM A36.

I would like to have some advise to make the right decision.

Thanks
